Photography

My father was a portrait photographer in Panama. Ever since I was a kid I was in my father’s shirttail in his studio learning every facet of photography from picture taking to developing. Yes, back in the day when darkrooms still existed. I used to love the smell of the chemicals. Always dreamed of having a darkroom in my home. Now we are in the digital age. Not only is photo manipulation very different, the creativity has grown exponentially which is why I am even more hooked. I truly cannot remember a moment in my life when I did not have some kind of camera – polaroid (yes, remember those? My first one used a roller to develop the picture!), film (135 and 110), and the latest the DSL. Though I resisted for a long time, I had to finally succumb to the digital world. It was well worth it. The images I create through my viewfinder is very different to what my father captured. Mine is much more architectural, industrial, abstract. My father was all about lighting manipulation in order to improve someone’s physique, while still keeping it natural. I am all about observing something, seeing it from every angle and figuring which angle would create the most interesting image. Now, instead of relying on the timing with the chemicals, it is immediate gratification by the mere turn of the dials.
